Open How related? in the builder and tap any two people. FamilyTreeCraft walks up both branches to the nearest shared ancestor and names the relationship: second cousin, great-aunt, first cousin twice removed, half-sibling or in-law.
The rule behind it is simple once you see it. Count each person’s steps down from the shared ancestor: the shorter branch, minus one, gives the cousin number, and the difference between the branches gives how many times “removed”. Yes. Every template, the relationship finder and PNG, PDF and SVG downloads are free with no watermark, account or trial.
Where is my family tree saved?
In your own browser (localStorage) on this device. Nothing is uploaded unless you use the optional “Describe with AI” helper, which sends only the text you type, once, to build the tree. Download a .json or GEDCOM backup to move the tree to another device.
Can I print my family tree as a poster?
Yes. Choose Export → PDF and pick A3 or Tabloid for a poster, or download the SVG, which stays sharp at any size for a print shop.
Can I add photos?
Yes. Select a person and choose Add photo. Photos are resized and kept in your browser. The Photo wall and Victorian cameo templates are designed around portraits.
Can I import a tree from Ancestry or another program?
Export a GEDCOM (.ged) file from your genealogy program and use Export → Import. FamilyTreeCraft reads names, sexes, birth and death years, couples and children.
How many people can a tree have?
There is no fixed limit. Trees of a few hundred people work, though very large trees are easier to read split into branches (one tree per grandparent line, for example).
