Choosing a family tree template
How many generations? A 3-generation tree (grandparents to grandchildren) fits comfortably on A4 or Letter paper. Four generations fit on A4 in landscape; five generations or large families read better on A3 or Tabloid.
Who is it for? For a framed gift, botanical and Family Bible styles print beautifully. For a reunion, the Reunion poster uses bold type that reads from across a room. For research, the Classic descendant chart and pedigree chart follow the conventions genealogists expect.
Photos or names only? The Photo wall and Victorian cameo templates have space for portraits; add photos per person in the builder.
Editable or printable? Both. Every template is a live layout, so adding a child or partner reflows it. Download the SVG if a print shop needs a vector file.
Questions
Are these family tree templates free?
Yes. All templates are free to use, edit and download as PNG, PDF or SVG with no watermark.
Can I edit a template online?
Yes. Open any template in the builder, type your own names and dates, add or remove relatives, then download it.
Can I print a blank family tree template?
Yes. Each template page has a “Blank boxes” option that downloads the layout with empty boxes, ready to fill in by hand.
Is there a family tree template in Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Download the blank 3- or 4-generation Word (.docx) chart at the top of this page. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs (File → Open → Upload), LibreOffice and Pages, and every box is an editable table cell.
Is there a family tree template in Excel?
We don’t offer a spreadsheet version: a tree drawn in Excel cells breaks as soon as you add a relative. Use the Word chart for a typed, fixed layout, or the online builder, which redraws the tree as it grows and can export a GEDCOM file for genealogy software.
Which template should I use for a school project?
The Building blocks and Blank printable templates are designed for children; the 3-generation tree is the quickest to complete.
